Jan De Vliegher is a leading Belgian painter with an abstract approach. He works from photographic images, which he carefully reworks compositionally and in color to capture the moment where figuration transitions into abstraction and fills the canvas. He attaches no importance to narrative detail and makes no claim to political or explicit messages; his work is entirely devoted to purely painterly experience. Light plays a central role, and the joy of painting is always palpable in his works.
De Vliegher studied painting at the Higher Institute of Visual Arts, Ghent and was awarded the Prize for Visual Arts of the Province of West Flanders. His work has been shown in major national and international exhibitions and is included in collections such as Dexia Brussels and the Flemish Parliament.
