Art Story
"Op wandel" is a drawing by Roger Raveel depicting a couple on a shared walk. Executed in pencil and ink on paper, the work captures in a sober and stylised manner an intimate, everyday moment of connection. The figures are shown from behind, without facial features, making them universal and timeless.
Yet - and since the work is mentioned in the book "Zulma, voor alles zichzelf" - it may be assumed that this depicts Raveel and his first wife.
In the foreground of the drawing, a striking fracture line is visible, which is also intersected by a plane in Raveel's characteristic style. This intervention introduces a visual tension open to the viewer's interpretation. It may suggest a rupture or disruption within the seemingly connected couple - or rather emphasise the contrasting divide between the rural character and the urban elements that emerge in the distance.
