Art Story

Festival, also known as Destroy Capitalism, depicts a group of individuals at a music festival (or another similar event), queuing to buy $30 t-shirts. These individuals are portrayed as punks, goths, and hippies - subcultures traditionally associated with anti-establishment views and distinct fashion choices. They symbolize what society often perceives as outsiders or anti-capitalists. However, their actions reveal a contradiction: they, too, are complicit in the very system they criticize. The work, therefore, underscores how even those who oppose capitalism can become entangled in its web. As is always the case with Banksy's work, this print also invites multiple interpretations. Festival can additionally be seen as an ironic commentary on how independent, anti-globalization events, such as alternative music festivals, have evolved into commercialized versions of themselves, contradicting the very values their attendees claim to support.
