Art Story

In the "Soup II" portfolio, Andy Warhol explores his fascination with American consumer culture through the Campbell's soup can as an immediately recognisable everyday object. This series consists of ten prints, or "flavours". Campbell's soup was also part of Warhol's daily life; he claimed to have eaten Campbell's soup for lunch every day for several years.
While each image follows the same basic premise, subtle differences keep the series visually engaging. In this series (unlike the first), Warhol also experiments with colour and catchphrases.
Warhol's soup can series reflects on mass production and the commercialisation of everyday life. By placing a familiar consumer product in an artistic context, he invites the viewer to look differently at everyday objects and their meaning.
The Soup series has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Tate Modern and the Andy Warhol Museum, and remains one of the most iconic bodies of work in Pop Art.
