Art Story
Piano Lesson is part of the "Superhero" portfolio, a series of estate-authorised screenprints based on works from Jean-Michel Basquiat's most celebrated period (1982-1987). The portfolio consists of four works: Flash in Naples, Riddle Me This, A Panel of Experts, and the musically charged Piano Lesson.
Piano Lesson depicts two schematic figures rendered in expressive linework, layered with anatomical references, fragmented text, and symbolic elements characteristic of Basquiat's visual language. Details such as labeled hands, short textual fragments, and diagrammatic forms refer to themes of knowledge, communication, and power. The use of bold colours-reds, blues, and blacks-creates strong visual tension across the surface.
The work brings a playful, almost childlike energy together with a clear conceptual depth. Piano Lesson demonstrates how Basquiat merges street culture with intellectual references. It feels both playful and critical, inviting viewers to explore its multiple layers of meaning.
The "Superhero" portfolio holds an important position within the Basquiat collecting landscape, due to the combination of estate authorization, iconic imagery, and the selection of works from his most influential period.
