Extra info:
Pride represents a striking departure from how this sin is traditionally depicted. Whereas pride was often portrayed as a female vice, Ensor depicts a self-centered man who is admired by those around him. Grinning skeletons appear around him, while a floating skeleton crowns him with a laurel wreath. The turkey, which struts like a proud peacock, also reinforces the theme of vanity and self-glorification. With humor and symbolism, Ensor exposes the emptiness behind inflated fame and delusions of grandeur.
This work is presented in a classic black frame with anti-reflective, UV-resistant glass and is featured in the book: A. Taevernier, page 301, T.122.
Bears a double signature by James Ensor, both in the plate and in pencil.

Art Story

In 1904, James Ensor published the album "Les sept péchés capitaux" with a foreword by his friend and biographer Eugène Demolder (1862-1919). The first etching, "Lust," was already published in 1888. It was not until later, between 1902 and 1904, that the six remaining deadly sins and the frontispiece were added.
The series consists of a total of eight etchings: seven individual deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth) and a frontispiece. In every work, there is a skeleton (the devil) that condemns sinners and warns viewers of hell and death. In these etchings, Ensor combines traditional religious iconography with his own expressive, humorous and grotesque style.
